Spring is a time to welcome in warmer weather, to enjoy colorful budding blooms and to thank our mothers.

Surprise mom this Mother’s Day with a simple bouquet of flowers and a hand-decorated vase. It is easy to make one of these vases out of an old jar from your recyclables bin. All you need to do is add some pretty paper craft tape (also commonly known as washi tape) and protect the tape with a little decoupage. The vase makes a cute gift that mom can use again and again.

You can customize the tape on the vase to mom’s favorite colors or patterns. If mom doesn't like stripes, you can apply the tape in any pattern you like. This simple craft would be a fun project kids could make for their moms, too.

If you do not have water-resistant decoupage, you can still decorate the vase with tape and give it as a gift without the protection. The washi tape may peel off over time, but mom can remove the tape and add more or just recycle the jar.

Easy washi tape vase

An easy craft for kids, these simple and sweet decorated jars make a pretty gift for mom this Mother’s Day.

Supplies:

• 1 empty, clean glass jar with smooth, vertical sides (label removed)
• Several rolls of paper craft tape in different patterns or colors
• Scissors
• Paintbrush
• Water-resistant decoupage (Outdoor or dishwasher-safe formulas are recommended)

Directions:

• Apply strips of washi tape in vertical stripes around your jar. Use scissors to trim the lengths to the desired height, in a staggered pattern, if desired. (You really could apply the tape in any pattern you like. Have fun with it.)

• Once the entire vase is covered, brush a thin coat of decoupage over all of the tape stripes. Allow that glue to dry and reapply at least one more coat.

• Allow the decoupage to dry and cure thoroughly according to the manufacturer’s guidelines. Once cured, the vase and paper tape should be resistant to water, so that the container can be washed and used again.
• Fill your vase with flowers and and give mom something personal and handmade.
