I like to find little ways to savor the last moments of the season, and that usually involves being outdoors. An abundance of fresh herbs is one of the many benefits of warm weather, but the good news is that they do well indoors, too. Creating a DIY herb garden is a great way to enjoy the last days of summer, while ensuring you can bring the sunshine inside when it gets cold.

What you'll need:
- Wood
- Hammer
- Nails
- Round metal clamps
- Screws
- Mason jars
- Herb plants
To assemble:
- Create the base of your garden by connecting two larger pieces of wood together. Do this by hammering two post-shaped pieces of wood into each of them, creating a four-post stand.
- Plant your favorite herbs into the Mason jars; I like oregano, rosemary, thyme, sage and basil.
- Slip the round metal clamps around your Mason jars, to size them, and then drill them into the wooden base.
- Place the Mason jar herbs into the clamps, and voila! If you like, label your plants by simply writing the herb name on popsicle sticks and placing them inside the Mason jars.
There are so many great placement possibilities for your new herb garden. You could display it on a sunny porch or along a decorative landscaping wall until the end of summer. Then just bring it inside and place it in your sunniest room and you'll have beautiful, summer-fresh herbs all year long.
If you haven't done much with your garden this year, it's not too late. Have some last minute fun with a few unconventional planters. I love taking old rain boots, and filling them with beautiful blooms. Another creative idea is to take an old dresser, move it to a focal point in your backyard, and then fill the drawers like you would window planters. Pull a few out and keep some closed for a layered secret garden.
