Growing up, anytime I was sad, especially in my teen years, my dad would take me on a drive, really listen to what I was thinking and feeling and he would always finish every talk by saying, "When you are sad you just need to start serving other people until you don't feel sad anymore."

And it's true, when I realize I need to stop worrying about my own problems and help other people with theirs it never fails to lift my spirit. My dad was always giving back, even when he didn't have a lot to give, and it taught me a lot about sacrifice. It's these values I hope to pass on to my own son as he gets older.

This holiday season, while I look forward to spending quality time with my family, eating yummy treats, I remind myself that it is also an important time to help others and give back; that's what the holidays are all about. I don't think it's a coincidence that everyone is so happy and cheerful during the time of year when people are giving back the most!

This season, I also hope to give someone in need a break from the stresses of everyday life and hopefully make them feel loved and let them know someone is looking out for them. Whether it is donating clothes, dropping off treats to neighbors, leaving an extra big tip for a waiter, taking gifts to a family in need or volunteering, we just want to make someone feel loved and appreciated.

In the spirit of giving, I had the opportunity to share my very special reason for giving this holiday season with SheKnows and The Salvation Army. Check out the video and share your #redkettlereason!
