We all know those days where it starts out cold and then ends up warm. How can you dress your children appropriately while still staying on trend and on budget? I put together four great looks that are playground appropriate and will work great with whatever the season throws at us.
Pretty-in-pink princess
Fall usually means warmer colors, but I have a daughter who can't step away from her favorite tone. Consider layering a faux-fur vest (there are so many great options on the market right now) with a shirt that add some extra detail. I love the lace sleeves on this shirt from H&M! Combine a fun and frilly skirt with some bright pink cowgirl boots and send your daughter on her way. Yee-haw!
Boden Vest (Bodenusa.com, $54); Boden Flippy Floral Skirt (Bodenusa.com, $42); Jersey Top with Lace Sleeves (Hm.com, $10); Heart Tights H&M (Hm.com, $13); Cozy Cableknit Ear warmers (Hannaandersson.com, $20); Volatile Kids Cowgirl boots (Zappos.com, $54)
Everyday cool
Put a boy in a button down and a pair of cords and he is good to go just about anywhere. Keep the look dressed down and fun with a pair of stylish sneakers; these are from UMI (one of my favorite brands). The looks give your son enough flexibility to still kick it around at the playground, but he can look the part after school at an impromptu meet-up with family and friends.
Mac II Shoes (Umishoes.com, $45); Five Pocket Straight Leg Cords (Hannahanderson.com, $42); Boys Plaid Poplin Shirts (Oldnavy.gap.com, $18); Boys Raglan-Sleeve Heathered Hoodies (Oldnavy.gap.com, $18)
Pleasing patterns
Plaid is such a great fall style and it works for both boys and girls. I adore this peasant top from Lands End. It's loose and comfortable and would work great with a pair of skinny jeans or leggings. Throw on a pair of flats like these electric shoes by Steve Madden or grab a pair of knee high boots. Like mommy like daughter!
Steve Madden Ecntric' Slip-On Shoes (Nordstrom.com, $44); Girls Knee-Patch Skinny Jeans (Oldnavy.gap.com, $20); Girls' Woven Peasant Top (Landsend.com, $30)
You can’t have a Fall look for a boy without a Camo look in the mix. I appreciate the hoodie in this jacket and I love the vest-like feel we get with the different colored sleeves. Whenever I have a bold pattern, I like to keep the rest of the outfit simple. A soft, comfortable long-sleeve shirt like this one from H&M would work perfectly combined with a pair of jeans and these Floater sneakers from Skechers. I always have recess in mind when dressing my son!
Hooded Camo Jacket (Shopjustice.com, $32); Skinny Jeans-Retro Vintage (Childrensplace.com, $10); Henley Shirt (Hm.com, $15); Skechers Relaxed Fit Floater Boys Toddler & Youth Sneaker (dsw.com, $45)
Something warm for your littlest ones
For the younger kids, I tend to steer away from jeans and firmer fabrics and instead opt for looser options. You can mix and match prints with toddlers and not worry so much about graphics not working with other outerwear pieces. Have fun! I love pulling from the green and brown families because they remind me of some of the best colors from fall.
Wandernder Wolf Graphic Tee (teacollection.com, $25); Holzschnitzer Flannel Shirt (teacollection.com, $40); Expresso French Terry Pants (letop-usa.com, $29); Hooded Down Coat (jacadi.us, $282); Momo Baby Leather Sandals (momobaby.com, $54)
Last but not least, we have a fun Peter Pan dress by Zutano. I am obsessed with Peter Pan collars and have been on a mission to find pieces for myself for the last few years. I'm always so excited when I find a dress for one of my little ones as well. Pair the dress with tights and boots and consider a bright puffer jacket to combat the wind.
Girls' Toggle Puffer (Jcrew.com, $155); Girls' Neon Zipper Chalet Boots (Jcrew.com, $148); Tiny Town Toddler Peter Pan Dress (Zutano.com, $34); Girls' Footed Tight-Heather Grey (Target.com, $5)
