Nothing says Fourth of July like a great fireworks display, right?
Well, I want to show you how you can bring a little bit of that exciting holiday event into your home without setting off fireworks inside. You can make this simple red, white and blue craft just in time for your Fourth of July party. These oversized DIY firecracker candles are a fun and festive way to decorate your holiday table.
This project would be a great painting craft to do with kids this summer. I like the hand-drawn look of each candle. If you didn't want to freehand the stripes or dots, you certainly could use tape or adhesive glass stencils for a crisper design. Either way, you’ll end up with a cute and unique patriotic decoration.
DIY painted firecracker candles
Supplies needed:
- 3 tall glass candles
- Rubbing alcohol
- Red and blue craft paint (either a multi-surface paint or one designed for glass)
- Sponge spouncer
- Brushes
- Red and blue craft paper
- Scissors
- Pencil
- Scrapbooking adhesive or tape
- Circular object for template
Instructions:
Using a clean rag or paper towel, clean the outside of the glass candles with rubbing alcohol.
With your spouncer, sponge some random dots around one of the glass candles in either the red- or blue-colored paint.
Using the brushes, freehand-paint some stripes around the other two candles in either a vertical and/or horizontal direction. You can keep the stripes all the same color, or alternate.
Allow the paint to dry and cure according to the manufacturer's directions. (Since these pieces contain wax, they cannot go in the oven but need to air-dry.)
Using a circular object (I used a small dessert plate), trace three circles onto the craft paper and cut the shapes out.
Cut a straight line towards the center of each circle and then wrap the paper around to form a cone. Secure the shape with adhesive or tape. Set your cone top over the opening of each candle.
Tip: Use more adhesive or a piece of rolled tape to help keep the paper cone secure to the top of the candle rim.
I think these candles could make a sweet little centerpiece for your Fourth of July party. When nighttime falls, just remove the paper tops and light the candles for more festive ambiance.
